PESTS

ANTS

Ants are a social insect that live in colonies mostly outside in soil, trees, wood or in or around rocks. They can be predatory or scavengers and adapt to the environment to best take advantage of conditions and food sources.

Ants are considered a nuisance pest as they can find their way into people’s homes in large numbers trailing across bench tops, walls, floors and anywhere else in search for food, they can also set up their home inside your buildings inside walls, roof cavity’s and basements. In Tasmania some of the larger ants can cause anaphylactic shock from their bites.

MANAGEMENT

We specialise in providing an effective treatment for Ants. Before we apply any treatment, our technicians will discuss your Ant situation with you. In addition to treating the infested space we will discuss with you ways of reducing the conditions that they thrive in, including hygiene measures, harbourage areas, exclusion and food availability.

BEDBUGS

Bed bugs only feed on blood. Under cool conditions, bed bugs have been able to survive up to a year without a meal. They prefer to be more active at night when the host is asleep. Found in cracks and crevices, including mattress seams bed bases, sheets, furniture, behind headboards, electrical outlet plates and picture frames. Often found in hotels, where they can travel from room to room and in visitors’ luggage or other personal belongings. Bed Bugs are small, nocturnal, wingless insects with a flattened body. They feed on human blood and other warm-blooded hosts. They are oval in shape and grow up to 4 to 5 mm long when fully grown. Their skin colour is rust brown to a deeper red brown.

MANAGEMENT

Remove all clutter from your home, which makes finding bed bugs easier.

Wash and dry your bed linens often using the hottest temperature allowed for the fabric.

Closely inspect any second-hand furniture for bed bugs before you bring it into your residence.

Inspection of your beds and luggage on a regular basis is essential, especially after travelling.

BIRDS

Birds can transmit diseases, such as Salmonella which is a severe form of food poisoning. The Salmonella bacteria can be found in the bird droppings and also in the eggs of infected Birds.

Birds can offer a safe haven for fleas, bird mites and cockroaches which feed from the birds and their fouled nesting materials and droppings. When the birds have finished nesting and leave, the fleas, mites and cockroaches come searching for us in search of a food source. The bites from Bird Mites can be quite painful and flea and mite populations can build up very quickly. Cockroaches come in search of food and enter our kitchens contaminating food and preparation areas.

Birds can also foul buildings and footpaths with their droppings. When wet these droppings can present a safety hazard and possible legal consequences for building owners. Birds can gain entry into Factories, particularly food related ones, and spoil and contaminate a significant amount of food.

They can cause damage to tractors, trucks, plant and machinery with their droppings and nesting materials which can cause fires. Introduced species can compete with food and nesting opportunities for native species of birds. Most birds are protected so if you are not sure contact us for free advice

MANAGEMENT

We specialise in providing an effective treatment for most feral birds.

Before we apply any treatment, our Technicians will discuss your bird situation with you, including preventative measures

COCKROACHES

Homes and buildings are ideal for cockroaches because they provide food, water, warmth and shelter. The most problematic cockroach in homes is the German cockroach which can breed quickly, and you may also have the American cockroach.

If you see cockroaches during the day or in areas where there is no food available such as bathrooms and bedrooms then you may have enormous population. Generally they are found in kitchens and wet areas. They can spread disease transporting bacteria and organisms from drains and unsanitary sources to your food and preparation surfaces and utensils.

They can seriously harm your reputation in business from the appearance in public areas especially in food handling areas such as cafes and restaurants.

FLEAS

People usually associate fleas with domestic households where pets live; however owners and their pets can unknowingly carry these pests with them to other homes, workplaces, offices, schools and hotels turning them into breeding grounds. Sometimes when you move into vacant dwellings that have previously had pets you may experience a flea problem.

If you can see small dark coloured insects jumping when you walk through carpeted areas or your pets have fleas, you have itching with no relief and have bite marks on your skin which resemble a round red area with a small darker red spot in the centre, then it’s likely that you have a flea infestation.

Fleas pose very little threat to our overall health, however, they can cause considerable discomfort and frustration from biting and itching.

Pets, however are more susceptible to diseases that fleas carry.

MANAGEMENT

We specialise in providing effective and fast treatment for fleas.

Before we apply any treatment, our technicians will discuss your flea situation with you. In addition to treating the infested space we will speak to you about effective measures to help control fleas and the management of your pets to stop the problem reoccurring.

We also provide you with some helpful printed facts on fleas.

FERAL CATS

Feral cats are an environmental issue in Tasmania, causing injury & death to many small native birds and animals. Originating from the domestic house cat, feral cats are cats that have been abandoned by or run away from their owners and who live life without proper shelter without a master. Because they are not housed or looked after, feral cats can often carry diseases.

MANAGEMENT

Phils Pest Control will trap feral cats and remove them from your property, and recommend an ongoing management plan.

WASPS & BEES

EUROPEAN WASPS, BEE REMOVAL

European wasps generally are 12-15mm long (similar size of a Honeybee). Bright yellow (not orange) with black markings, including arrow-shaped marks down the middle of the abdomen with paired black spots on the sides. Wings are long and transparent, antennae black, and legs mostly yellow. European wasps are mainly active through the spring, summer and into the autumn. Their nests are nearly always concealed and commonly underground, under timber or in a roof space, wall cavity or under your house.

EUROPEAN WASPS AND BEES – A Serious Pest! Wasps will aggressively defend their nest by swarming out to attack a disturbance. The sting received is painful and they can sting multiple times. Bees however can only sting once, they both can cause an anaphylactic reaction if you are allergic. They have also been known to attack dogs and horses.

MANAGEMENT

Given the severity of a wasp or bee infestation in your home, it is always best to leave this to the experts. We have a specific wasp or bee treatment program designed to exterminate them completely. It is important not to approach an active nest as wasps and bees can be very aggressive towards interference. Also be careful of wasps around barbeque or picnic areas, cover food and drinks. Wasps can get into food and drinks where they can be accidently swallowed. If this is the case get medical assistance immediately.

SPIDERS

Spiders are usually not aggressive towards humans and generally only bite or cause problems when their space is invaded and they feel threatened. However, the sight of spiders and their webs especially in large numbers, can evoke uneasiness and fear.

If you see unsightly webs and actual large spiders or lots of baby spiders around your home this is generally a good indication that they have just begun breeding and it is the time to call an experienced pest control operator. If you have a spider infestation, it is important to arrange for a professional to visit and remove them safely and effectively; so you aren’t dealing with cycle after cycle of spiders. It isn’t safe, and is rarely effective for an untrained individual to attempt to tackle a spider infestation.

MANAGEMENT

There are ways to keep spiders away from your home. Spiders often venture inside in search of food and shelter but will normally move on quickly if nothing is available. Ensure all food is in sealed containers and always ensure you have a clean environment. Don’t leave clothes laying on floors especially with white tail spiders , clean up all that clutter and loose items you have laying around.

If you do find your home has a severe spider problem, leave it to the professionals. Our staff will ensure that spiders are professionally controlled.

RATS & MICE

Buildings are ideal for rats and mice because they provide food, water, warmth and shelter. In Tasmania you may notice rats and mice move inside more leading into the cooler months although they can remain there all year.

The three main rodents that cause problems are the Norway rat, Roof Rat and the House Mouse.

They all cause damage to buildings, electrical wiring, electric white goods, food, grain, personal items, cars, trucks, tractors, they spread disease and leave droppings and urine smells.

Have you checked your house insurance policy to see if you are covered from chewing and gnawing rodents?

MANAGEMENT

We will identify your type of rodent and implement the best type of control measure to free you of problems. We have snap traps, multi catch traps, bait and have secure rodent bait stations available.

INSECTS

We treat many other insects from silverfish, scorpions, wood lice, millipedes, carpet beetles, clothes, moths, food & pantry pests to name a few. If in doubt call us today.

POSSUMS

While possums are native to Australia and a protected species, living with possums in your roof can be frustrating. These out of control critters have been known to chew through electrical wire, conduit and timber, causing great expense, while their droppings and urine can present a health risk and smell can become unbearable. Their noise can keep you awake and behaviour can scare some people. We are licenced with the Department of Primary Industries Parks Water and Environment (DPIPWE) to trap and remove possums in Tasmania.

Because suburbia has increasingly encroached on their natural habitat, these marsupials have no choice but to adapt and find new places to live and find things to eat. This can be a problem if one or a family of possums find a way into your ceiling or roof cavity to set up home, or decide that their next meal is coming from your vegetable patch or even worse, the fruit bowl on your kitchen table.

MANAGEMENT

While humans and possums need to learn to exist in harmony with each other, if one is causing you issues you can have them removed from your home and then seal off the entry point or crevice where they are entering your dwelling. This is an effective possum deterrent and will have them on their way to find another place to live.

We specialise in providing effective removal of possums and our technicians will discuss your possum situation with you. In addition to removal of the possums we will speak to you about ways of preventing a recurrence of the problem. Phils Pest Control is licensed by the DPIPWE .
